Although the origin of the naming of Kaukhali Upazila is not known, the common belief of the common people is that in the past the people of the area dug wells or holes in many places and used that water for food and other purposes. The local name of this well or hole is 'Kau'. Later, the upazila was named Kaukhali after the combination of the two words 'Kau' and 'Khali'.
