No matter what name or title the members of the village police may be called, they exercise the powers and perform the duties described in Part II of Schedule 1 of the Local Government (Union Parishad) Ordinance, 1973. Powers and functions of the village police
1.A village police patrols the union day and night. 2.Investigates and suppresses all matters related to the crime and assists the police as much as possible in arresting the culprits. 3.Assists the Chairman and the Union Parishad in discharging their official duties. 4.If there is no other instruction, he informs the officer-in-charge of the concerned police station about the condition of the area every fortnight. 5.Notices the movements of people of bad character in the union and occasionally informs the officer-in-charge of the police station. 6.He also informed the officer-in-charge of the police station about the presence of any suspicious person from the adjoining area. 7.A person hiding in the union, who has no public income to support his life or who cannot give a satisfactory answer about his own identity, reports to the officer-in-charge of the police station.
8.The union immediately informs the officer-in-charge of the police station if any information is found about the following offenses or the possibility of their occurrence. 9.E.g.- Riot, 10.Secretly removing corpses and concealing birth information, 11.Pushing a child out of the house to death, 12.Damage caused by fire, 13.Poisoning or harming cattle. 14.Attempted homicide or suicide and attempted to commit the above mentioned crime or offense.
1.Any person involved in a felony or against whom a reasonable charge has been made or credible information has been obtained or there is a good reason to be involved in a criminal act.
2.If a person has access to demolition equipment without a valid reason. 3.If any person is found guilty by any order of the government or under the Criminal Procedure Code of 1898 (Act No. 5 of 1896).
4.Any person in whose possession there is a good reason to suspect that the goods or goods are stolen goods or if he sees these goods and suspects that he is involved in a crime. 5.If a person escapes or attempts to escape from legal custody or supervision.

If a government employee working in the village or a common man temporarily arrests a person under any law, he assumes his responsibility and will immediately bring to the notice of the officer-in-charge of the police station the person or persons he has assumed responsibility or the person or persons he has arrested.Provided, however, that if any person or persons are arrested in the dark of night, he or she may be placed under legal supervision in the village. But they have to be produced at the police station as early as possible the next morning.
